How much does exterior door replacement cost in Maryland?
HomeGuide’s 2026 guide puts a basic single front door at $500 to $2,500 or more installed. Homewyse’s September 2026 national average starts at $1,002 to $1,527 per door for basic mid-range work. These are published ranges, not a quote from us. Our estimate for door installation and repair in Odenton is free and happens at the house.
HomeGuide’s range assumes the new door is the same size as the old one. Homewyse prices a fiberglass slab fit to the existing jamb, without the lockset, finishing or moldings. For doors inside the house, see our interior door cost guide.
What does each type of exterior door cost?

How much does a storm door cost installed?
HomeGuide puts an installed mid-view storm door at $350 to $700 and a high-view door at $375 to $750. A full-view door runs $425 to $950, and a retractable-screen door $475 to $1,000. Homewyse’s September 2026 national average starts at $632 to $964 per door.
The style names describe the glass. A mid-view door has a large kick panel and less glass than a high-view door. A high-view door has glass on top and a small kick panel at the bottom. A full-view door is one full-length glass panel.
Retractable-screen doors cost the most of these four styles. Their screens roll up or down and tuck out of sight inside the frame. HomeGuide puts storm door labor alone at $175 to $350, depending on the door type and the install.
We install new storm doors and adjust old ones that slam or drag. Once the door is hung, we set the closer and the sweep so it seals at the sill.
What makes a front door replacement cost more?
Five things move the price: slab or prehung, the frame, removing the old door, finish work and the door material. HomeGuide says slab doors are cheaper but more labor-intensive. A prehung door is the most common type, and it comes attached to a frame.
A slab is the door alone, fit to the jamb you already have. That works when the frame is square and solid. Sometimes the old frame stays even though it is not in excellent shape. HomeGuide says frame repair then adds $75 to $200 or more.
Removing and disposing of the old door typically adds $75 to $200, though some contractors include it. Many new doors also arrive unfinished. HomeGuide puts hiring out the paint on a front door at $125 to $225. We can take on painting the new door and trim on the same job.
Material moves the price too. HomeGuide’s single-door range starts with basic steel doors, around $200 to $600. Higher-end wood or fiberglass doors run up to $2,000. Casing that cracks when the old door comes out gets replaced through our casing and trim carpentry.
Does a rotted jamb or a sticking door change the job?
Yes, in both directions. Soft wood at the bottom of the jamb or under the threshold adds repair work. A door that only sticks, sags or will not latch may not need replacing at all. Hinge adjustments and new hardware often solve it.
Rot starts where water sits, at the bottom of the jamb and along the door sill. A small soft spot can often be cut out and replaced with new wood. Our page on wood rot repair for door frames covers that work.
If the rot runs past the door sill into the framing below, that is structural work. It goes to a licensed contractor with a county permit, and we tell you that at the estimate.
A door that sticks at the top corner has often sagged on its hinges, and that is a repair. A new door makes sense when the slab is split or soft from water. We do both kinds of work, so ask about a repair at your estimate.
What do patio, sliding and French doors cost?
They usually cost more than a basic front door. HomeGuide’s 2026 guide puts a new patio door at $600 to $6,000, door and labor included. Replacing one runs $700 to $6,500. A sliding door runs $1,200 to $4,000 installed, and exterior French doors $1,300 to $5,500.
Labor is its own line. HomeGuide says installers charge $200 to $1,000 for patio door labor alone. Removing and disposing of the old door adds $100 to $500.
Our patio door work is repair. We replace worn rollers, fix tracks and latches, and replace torn screens. A slider that drags often just needs new rollers. The ranges above show what a full replacement costs on the market.
Do you need a permit to replace an exterior door in Anne Arundel County?
Check with the county before work starts. Anne Arundel County’s do-I-need-a-permit list has no row that names door replacement. Its Residential Alteration row covers renovation to an existing structure that does not expand the footprint. That row is marked permit required.
To confirm whether a permit is needed, the county asks owners to email [email protected]. Include the address and the scope of work.
A bigger opening is a different job. Turning a single door into a double door means widening the wall opening and adding a new header. That is structural work for a licensed contractor with a county permit, and we say so at the estimate.
Is there still a federal tax credit for a new exterior door?
Not for a door installed in 2026. The IRS says the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit covers improvements made through December 31, 2025. Under that credit, ENERGY STAR exterior doors were capped at $250 per door and $500 total. So price a 2026 door without counting on that credit.
